PRINTMAKING GLOSSARY
| |
|
EDITION The set number of impressions printed
from a matrix, numbered sequentially, e.g. 3/25, 4/25, etc.
| |
|
MATRIX The surface in which prints are
"pulled". The artist creates the matrix by drawing on a
lithographic stone, cutting a woodblock, etching a plate, etc.
| |
|
BON A TIRER (B.A.T.) "Good To Pull" An artist
working with a printer will sign the approved B.A.T. as a reference
for the printing of the edition.
| |
|
ARTIST'S PROOF (A/P) Prints outside the
numbered edition usually made for the artist's use;
generally 10% of the number in the edition.
| |
|
TRIAL PROOF (T/P) Prints made during the
creation of the matrix to test the colour choice, sequence, etc.
| |
|
STONE AND PLATE LITHOGRAPHS Lithography is based on
the fact that water and oil do not mix. The artist draws on a ground
slab of limestone or metal with a greasy material. The stone or plate
is etched with acid, making the non-image areas receptive to water while
the drawing repels it. When the dampened stone is rolled with oil
based ink, it is only the drawn areas that will accept ink.
| |
|
INTAGLIO Intaglio is the catch-all term for several
recessed printing methods such as etching, engraving, aquatint and
drypoint. The recessed lines hold the ink while the smooth plate
surface is wiped clean. It is common to see an embossed plate line
on the edge of an image.
| |
|
RELIEF PRINTS Linoleum (linocuts) and woodcuts.
Unlike Intaglio prints, relief prints are created by surface
rolling the carved matrix, leaving the cut lines white.
| |
|
MONOTYPE A one-of-a-kind print created by applying
ink directly on a smooth surface such as glass or metal and pressing
the paper against it.
| |
|
MONOPRINT Similar in method to the monotype
except the printing matrix will have some repeatable imagery.
| |
|
MIXED MEDIA PRINTS Artists will often
follow the requirements of the image and employ multiple
techniques to achieve the desired result.
